Parent meeting minutes 10/3/2010
Present at the meeting: Michael Shear, Anna Aruma, Sams Knochs, Ilze Berzina, Steven Larsen, Eveta Linebaugh, Jekabs Berzkalns, Laila Kalnina, Imants Minka, Dace Dixon, Diana Karklina, Irene Elksne-Geisler, Ingrida Heinze
Principal's announcements: Next week, 10/10/10, school will be ending at 12:20 pm. The November 18 event will be on November 14 - details regarding school participation are still to be determined.
Treasurer's announcements: In the previous meeting, the issue came up about raising the tuition because the school is expected to operate at a loss again this year. The school does have funds of approximately $15,000. Feedback from parents: Irene Elksnis/Imants Minka felt that the tuition should not be increased. The school is for the benefit of the students, not for the purpose of contributing funds to organizations, which is part reason for the loss last year. A vote was taken regarding increase tuition: 1 parent abstained, 1 parent in favor of increase, 11 parents vote for tuition to remain at $250. Ilze B. has looked/asked for original school documents, but cannot find purpose of remaining funds, should the school cease to exist. A decision regarding any remaining funds was not made at this time. Imants M. will check out tax id # of school and compare to that of the center to determine under what organization's status the school is operating.
Saites.org - website that includes the Latvian school information, Sam will update in the future.
Next parent meeting is November 7.
Parent meeting minutes 9/19/2010
Present at the meeting: Anna Aruma, Eveta Linebaugh, Andra Elksne, Arturs Ziemelis, Raimonds Grivins, Laila Kalnina, Ilze Berzina, Imants Minka, Marga Keizer, Ingrida Heinze, Samuel Knochs III
Since we have several new students and parents, everyone introduced themselves.
All parents were asked to complete a medical/information form on the first day of school. Almost all forms have been completed.
The school calendar was distributed.
Treasurer's announcements: Last school year we had a loss of $1,913.68, which included a $1,000.00 donation to the Kalamazoo Latvian Center. This year's school tuition will be $250, payable in January.
Secretary's announcements: All non-teaching parents will take their turn cleaning the classrooms and common areas after school. A list will be distributed soon.
The annual November 18 event at the Center will be on November 14. Details about school participation are still unknown.
Ilze Berzina suggested the school consider raising the tuition to $300 for the first child. We need to consider this year's budget and the school's future plans before making this change.
A decision must be made regarding the date for the Eglite. If it is on December 12, school will resume on January 2 after the holiday break. If it is on December 19, school will resume on January 9 after the holiday break. Laila will email the parents for a vote on the date.
The question came up whether the Eglite should be a community event rather than just a school event. In year's past, student families have been the only ones to support Eglite.
Ilze suggested that a parent volunteer from each class ensure that each student gets an appropriate gift at the Eglite, valued at about $10.
At the Eglite, there will be performances from each class, including a dance. The teachers will decide on the performances.
Next parent meeting is October 3, 2010.
